The Minor Arcana

The Minor Arcana consists of four suits: Wands, Cups, Coins, and Swords.

There are 14 cards in each suit, from Ace to 10, plus the personality cards: Page, Knight, Queen, and King. Each suit represents an element:

  • Wands - Fire
  • Cups - Water
  • Coins - Earth
  • Swords - Air

These 56 cards of the Minor Arcana should be viewed as a whole, not merely as a single suit. If you notice a predominance of Wands in a spread, this indicates a lot of work. For instance, if Coins are missing in a spread, it could mean the person either has plenty of that aspect that doesn’t need to manifest or none at all—but you will sense that from the cards laid out.

Later on, when you incorporate the Major Arcana, you gain additional guidance. Many cards of a particular suit appearing in a spread can indicate either numerous "life-changing" events or that you have substantial control over the situation.

Wands symbolize creativity, activity, inner fire, work of all kinds, creation, building, and talents. In Wands, you deal with work-related events—everything you expend, your internal power, and your creative output. Wands indicate swift actions, heat, intensity, opportunities, actions, acting, work, creative force, activity, motivation, dominance, creativity, and energy. All of these are collectively termed as work, which is the hallmark of Wands.

  • Love:
    • Wands signify action, impulses, passion, and sex. It’s a masculine, action-oriented suit, indicating sexual interest.

A dominance of Wands points to work-related situations. Work can include hobbies, housework, schooling, distance learning, any form of education, or situations requiring time and commitment.

  • Wands with Coins signify economic work situations.
  • Wands with Cups signify emotional work situations.
  • Wands with Swords point to conflicts or significant work-related situations—both positive and negative.

A dominance of Coins indicates situations involving money and material things. This can concern assets, stocks, or real estate.

  • Coins with Wands indicate money arising from work situations.
  • Coins with Cups indicate love within the home, pleasant domesticity, possessions, and material standards at home, stable relationships.
  • Coins with Swords indicate conflicts regarding material things and the home. This can also reinforce agreements, contracts, and documents.

A dominance of Cups signifies a lot of emotions and love in relationships.

  • Cups with Swords reflect emotions and ultimate emotional decisions, showing very strong feelings, even jealousy and envy.
  • Cups with Wands indicate love associated with work or strong feelings related to work, workplaces, or colleagues.
  • Cups with Coins reflect love that has or needs a home base. Significant material values in relationships.

A dominance of Swords indicates thoughts and feelings rather than actions, highlighting substantial mental activity and blockages.

  • Swords with Wands indicate mental issues making work laborious; work disrupting plans.
  • Swords with Coins reveal fixations on material values and poor economic planning.
  • Swords with Cups reveal strong feelings, not always expressed, but from a distance. Many thoughts surrounding love and stable relationships.
